What are Groove, Cove and Rebate?

Groove

A Groove is a long, narrow cut or depression made in the surface of a hard material. it can be cut in mainly three different shapes -

  • Flat-bottomed
  • V-shaped
  • Rounded

To make each type of groove, specific type of router bits are used. Straight or spiral router bits are used to make flat-bottomed grooves. For V-shaped Grooves, V-groove bits are used and round nose bits are used to cut rounded grooves.

Cove

An arched or rounded groove formed on the edge of a material is called Cove.  This can be made using cove router bits. It can also be made with round nose router bits.

Cove cuts are generally made to create decorative fluting on the surface of the material. They are often made at the junction of a wall with ceiling or to make drop leaf table.

Rebate

A Rebate is a right angled groove cut made on the edge of a material. They are usually used for the purpose of making joints, especially the lap joints.

For making a lap joint, a rebate is cut on the end of two pieces of material. Then the rebated ends of these pieces are overlain and the rebates are attached together to form a solid joint.

Both rebate router bit and straight router bit can be used to cut a rebate.
